Mats Hillert and materials science.
Abstract:
Mats Hillert was one of the giants in materials science. Although he started in physical metallurgy his influence came to range over the whole of materials science, from metallographic investigations of cast iron and steel to thermodynamics of semiconductors.
In this talk I will discuss Mats’ contributions in some of his favorite topics.
For example, diffusional transformations in metallic alloys, equilibrium and non-equilibrium interfaces, grain growth, CALPHAD modelling and the leadership in international collaborations.
